Simple Summer - Color Palettes
With the flowers in bloom, beach towels on the line and fruity beverages with umbrellas, summer is a terrific time to try out a new color palette. In keeping with our Simple Summer Series, here are a few ideas to help you unearth some new color ideas.
- Take a tour of a color palette generator such as https://coolors.co/ or https://color.adobe.com/create/color-wheel.
- Search for "color palette ideas" on Pinterest or in your favorite browser.
- Take a stroll through a garden, feed your senses with the colors of nature and snap some photos.
- Too hot to be outside? Plan a trip to your local art museum and make note of the colors used in your favorite work of art.
- Looking for an edgy look? Visit your local shopping center and take a tour of the hippest store you can find for the latest color trends.
Now that you have some inspiration. apply it!
Look through your markers and art supplies to find 2 to 3 corresponding colors and create a quick sketchnote, graph or chart.
Out and about? Color inspiration can pop up anywhere. Going digital is a quick, easy way to try our new color combos. Recently I noticed an unusual combination of colors in a slide deck during a presentation I was attending. I pulled out my trusty iPad, loaded up my favorite digital sketchnoting app, popped in the new color combo and created this quick diagram during the talk.
It was fun and inspiring to
play with colors outside my usual comfort zone.

Dig Deeper.
Take a look at what you've created and ask yourself these 3 questions.
- What do you like?
- What did you learn?
- What might you do differently next time?
Up for more? Rinse and repeat with 2 to 3 different colors.
